Ming-Ta Du (Brandon Du): Chinese Beauty
Curatorial statement
Colleagues often make me aware of work by some of their students. Mildred Howard sent me images of one of her student's work, which I am sharing with you here.Ubiquitous pink plastic grocery bags have been recontexted here as art materials covering gallery walls and the floor where piles of vegetables commonly used in Chinese cuisine lie in corners as if stacked in grocery stalls for presentation to customers. The rose colored bags create a luminescent atmosphere that shrouds the space. Ming-Ta was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1980 and received his BFA in Commercial Design from Ming Chuan University, Taipei, Taiwan in 2002. He will receive his MFA in Design+Technology, San Francisco Art Institute in 2009. Chinese Beauty is his MFA show.
Ming-Ta Du's Artist Statement
San Francisco's Chinatown is the largest and oldest Chinatown in North America. It is the embodiment of Chinese society in America. It contains very different traditions and customs from western culture. At the same time, its traditions are different from those actually from Chinese culture. People come from all around to shop in Chinatown. Many people can be seen carrying a pink plastic bag around. The bag not only carries fruits and vegetables but also the associations of a whole society and culture. For me, as a Taiwanese person in Unite States, these highly symbolic bags represent "Chinese Beauty" in San Francisco.
