Manifest Destiny: Mildred Howard at Moeller Fine Arts Berlin

Lizzetta LeFalle-Collins

Mildred Howard wrote me from Berlin where she had gone for the opening of Manifest Destiny at the end of September—she was one of three artists. She is someone who is keenly aware of building materials because since her "bottle houses" from early 1990s, she has been building structures out of different types of materials. She took me through the gallery building writing "The architecture is really incredible…. The gallery where my work is shown is in a beautiful restored building. From the outside it looks one way and then you walk into an area where stairs lead to the first level.

Just beyond there is a view of a courtyard. Up the terrazzo stairs--a beautiful room with parquet floors. This five-story building was constructed in 1881-–not old by European standards. Entering the gallery to the left is a wood paneled room with inlay patterns in the ceiling painted a Pompeii red. This is where I will do my lecture on Saturday. To the right are three rooms beautifully redone as gallery spaces.

This is where the show is. The piece "What Came First" is the first thing you see upon entering. There are six other pieces in the show. The piece with the rolling pin [Kiss the Cake] hangs on the wall instead of on a pedestal. Visit Galleries to see artwork by Mildred in Manifest Destiny.
